XBeam, the world’s first Beam Engine that integrates automation and 5G mmWave testing

The World’s First mmWave OTA Testing Solution TMYTEK designed is Capable of Testing mmWave Modules in Seconds

Manufacturing is one of Taiwan’s strong suits, and advanced technology plays an important role in industrial upgrading. How quickly Taiwan can secure a predominant strategic position in 5G battles is vital to its economic development in the next 10 years. TMY Technology co. (TMYTEK), a Taiwan-based startup known for its remarkable 5G mmWave solution, presented XBeam, a cutting-edge 5G NR mmWave OTA testing solution for automated mass production, on its “#BeamUp 5G, 2020 XBeam Demo Day” on November 20. TMYTEK has also worked with HON. PRECISION, INC., a leading semiconductor automation equipment manufacturer in Taiwan, on developing rapid and automatic measurement for production lines, and such integration is a solution that solves the pain point of the industry.

The XBeam production line measurement solution is capable of testing mmWave modules in seconds

Many iconic semiconductor companies were impressed by XBeam on the 2020 XBeam Demo Day. According to a representative from ASE Group, the world’s top 10 providers of semiconductor assembling and test manufacturing services, XBeam is highly competitive on the market. Su-Wei Chang, the founder of TMYTEK said that traditional OTA (Over-the-Air) testing technique, such as CATR, is time consuming, laborious and lumbersome, and thus is often the bottleneck of mass production testing. For manufacturers, time is money, so the traditional tool is rather inefficient for infrastructure and technology application from the aspect of practice and cost. On the other hand, XBeam, the highlight of the Demo Day, is an innovative, rapid and automatic 5G mmWave OTA testing solution developed by TMYTEK to solve the problem. Vice President Ethan Lin conducted a live demo on a XBeam-integrated automatic machine, showing that XBeam can either measure a module in 3 seconds or identify a broken module. Such performance demonstrates TMYTEK's capability of effectively increasing the speed and accuracy of quality checks in production lines.

A touch of Picasso and Watson in XBeam

The key to achieve high speed measurement in XBeam lies in the integration of hardware and software. The unique and one of the kind QRcode scan developed by TMYTEK is different from traditional mechanical positioners. The built-in mmWave probe is an extension from TMYTEK’s advantageous technique, BBox, which helps achieve the integration of a light frame and automatic equipment. It is a big step towards the industry's final goal—automated mass production. In terms of software, there is no restriction on the size of DUTs, so it can meet the module testing requirements for a wide range of applications from smartphones to base stations. Apart from this, with a driver, XBeam can be paired with any kind of measuring instruments on the market.

In addition to the above advantages, XBeam also possesses three unique features: OTACali, mmWatson and BeamPicasso, “OTACali” can effectively regulate phase and amplitude of AiP (Antenna in Package) while "mmWatson" probes broken DUTs from antenna arrays, and BeamPicasso, the key of beamforming, quickly detects the characteristics of beams from different angles, which is essential for mass production of base stations and mobile devices. Patents have been applied to protect the novel solution that not only reduces costs but also extensively and flexibly assists analyzer measurement. It is a perfect representation of TMYTEK's mastery of transmission at mmWave bands and its strength in R&D.

In addition to the live demonstration of XBeam, several key products of TMYTEK were also displayed, including BBox, the world's first beamforming development kit that assists verification of antenna and algorithm in the R&D phase; UD Box, a great tool that converts frequency between low frequency and high frequency; and various AiP (Antenna in Package) designs exclusively developed by TMYTEK and integrated with production techniques of big international companies. With 3 years of effort in the 5G industry, TMYTEK has supplied its products to several Fortune 500 companies, and TMYTEK's XBeam demonstrated today is a boost for Taiwan's supply chain. Su-Wei Chang said that as a new member of O-RAN, starting from 2020, TMYTEK will develop more mmWave products applicable to 5G base stations and LEO satellite stations.

Taiwan is ready to take on challenges at mmWave bands brought by the 5G/B5G market

Mr. Chang also announced on the Demo Day that TMYTEK has successfully raised a Series A+ of USD $10 million from investors, including Invetec, Kenmec Mechanical Engineering, ITEQ CORPORATION and TAMAGAWA ELECTRONICS, Japan, for strategic investment. Among them, the CEO of ITEQ CORPORATION is also the CEO of WIN Semiconductors Corp. Moreover, while Cathay Financial Holdings' financial investment strengthens the resources connection, the additional investment from National Development Fund continues to support the 5G industry in Taiwan. It is official that TMYTEK has constructed a complete 5G industrial chain with the above-mentioned partners, aiming to present Taiwan's capacity at mmWave spectrum to the whole world.
